Chatswood Early Risers Toastmasters

Better listening, better speaking, better communication

Table Topics Competition Results

Today's Table Topics competition was a lot of fun! There were
six contestants: Jill, Lucy, Ian, Charles, Marina and Anne Marie.

Our chief judge was Area Governor Adrienne McLean and the topic
was "What motivates you to succeed?".

The placings were Charles (1st), Marina (2nd) and Ian (3rd). The next level
of the competition is the Area 34 contest to be held on Monday 7th September at
the Greengate Hotel, Killara starting at 7 pm.

Toastmasters are debating bills at their meeting!

by guest columnist, Davida Liang.

We, at Chatswood Early Risers were confronted with a challenge on
Tuesday morning when Table Topics Master for the week, Lucy decided to
try something new.

In keeping with the theme, Politics, she conducted her own session in
Parliament by asking a member of the government, as well as a member
of the opposition to argue their respective views on a particular bill
before calling a vote. The topics varied from Townsville should be
Australia’s capital city, that a fortnight should be nine days to
there should be an International Men’s Day.

‘Innovative’ was the word the general evaluator used to describe this
table topics session and innovative it was. This was made abundantly
clear when the final bill, that there should be an International Men’s
Day, failed to pass Parliament due to the lack of support, even from
the male audience members! How times have changed since the suffragettes first
came on to the scene.

We, members wonder what will be in store for us next week..

Welcome to the 2009-2010 Toastmasters year

Welcome to the 2009-2010 Toastmasters year!

My name is Charles Cave and I am the club President for the next 12
months. I have been a member of Chatswood Early Risers for 5 years and
served on the committee in various roles. I am working on my
Advanced Communicator Gold certificate (AC-G) as well as enjoying the
challenge of speech contests.

But what I enjoy most about Toastmasters is helping new members
achieve their goals by mentoring and encouragement with speeches and
other meeting roles. I want to help YOU succeed.

I am looking forward to working with the executive committee of new
members and experienced members. Henry and Keiko are looking after the
education and meeting programs as VP Education.

Lucy is our VP Membership and Marina is VP Publicity. They are both
new, enthusiastic members and I am sure they will do a great job
attracting visitors to the club and nurturing new (and not so new!)
members.

Ian is our Sergeant at Arms, setting up the room and calling the
meeting to order. Estelle (assisted by Pauline) are managing the
finances of the club, and Jill is our secretary.

Toastmasters is an ideal environment for you to gain confidence in
public-speaking and leadership skills. I always get pleasure watching
the transformation of a visitor who is scared of standing in front of
a group, to a confident, entertaining and inspiring speaker. In many
cases, this transformation is rapid, but you have to participate and
willing to have a go. What have you got to lose?

The annual debate with Chandos Challengers

Over four years ago, Janet Whitten (Chatswood Early Risers) and Phil
Raymond (Chandos Challengers) were seated next together at a District
function. During their initial conversation, they soon discovered both
their clubs met in the morning. A suggestion was made to organise a
joint event, namely a debate.

The first debate was held in 2006 with Chandos emerging as winner. A
trophy was purchased and the engraving shows the Chatswood Early
Risers claiming victory in 2007 and 2008. Chandos won this year's
debate so the trophy is on its way to St Leonards ready to be
contested next April.

Debating usually reminds people of school days but the Chatwsood Early
Risers have an annual education session and practice debate. The
annual inter-club debate has proved so popular, that several members
have asked the VPE to schedule more club debates.

Clare and Claire. The opposition team was Henry, Grant and Stephanie.
Jan conducted the adjudication and declared the "For" team to be the

Well done, everybody!

Yak Yak Award

Each week, we vote for the best Table Topic and the winner is
presented with the Yak Yak award, a mechanical duck that makes some
noise when switched on. This week's winner was Marina. In the
background is Brian.
