The club debate

Each year Chatswood Early Risers Toastmasters club has a debate with
Chandos Challengers. First we have a debate within the club and this
year's topic (chosen by Chandos Challengers) was "A Polar Bear Would
Win a Fight with a Rhino".

The team for the argument was Davida, Lucy and Paul, and the team
arguing against the topic was David, Stephanie and Brian.

The debate was adjudicated by three judges who deliberated for some
time over a very close competition. The opposition team were declared
the winners.

A team of Paul, David and Brian will battle against Chandos this
Thursday morning (5th May) at 7.10am at St Leonard. Come along and
support our team.

Is Obama no longer a good communicator?

Obama-300x182

The decker.com blog posted an article about the 10 best and 10 worst
communicators of 2010. US President Barack Obama is now considered a
poor communicator. This is what they wrote - do you agree?

Obama – Cadence, teleprompters and arrogance gets him here.

The President almost always has to be somewhere on the Top Ten list.
And President Obama has gone a long way, the wrong way, after landing
the #1 Best spot in 2006 and 2008. He has actually regressed as a
communicator since taking office.

Needing to give numerous ghost-written speeches a day has left Obama
disastrously reliant on the teleprompter – a tool he has not learned
to use effectively.

His vocal tone and facial expressions no longer convey the passion
and enthusiasm that rallied Americans to elect him in 2008.

Often, his style is professorial, his content purely informational,
and he’s adopted a sing-songy cadence that is only amusing when
spoofed by SNL.

It’s no accident that his slide as a communicator parallels his
slipping popularity.

Communications can carry, or bury, a presidency.

Confucius was a Toastmaster!

Darin2

The meeting of 28th September had the theme of Confucius.  Darin opened the meeting with the following address:

Little does everyone know but Confucius was actually a very accomplished Toastmaster. Early in his career though he was frustrated people couldn't talk to time so Confucius said –

"To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short".

He also noticed that people often weren't very well prepared so Confucius said –

"Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure".

He was very keen to make a start on his icebreaker though as Confucius said –

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".

While nobody knew him initially that was fine as Confucius said –

"Worry not that no one knows of you but rather seek to be worth knowing".

He was soon entering speech contests but was initially disappointed with the results so, annoyed at the judges, Confucius said –

"Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it".

He knew this was not the fault of the judges though and realised that he in fact just found public speaking very difficult. With this in mind Confucius said –

"When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, but rather just adjust the steps to get there".

While he was always very keen to reach his goals Confucius said –

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop".

And with that throughout his life Confucius not only became a very accomplished Toastmaster but also reached all his goals and lived happily ever after!

Table Topics - Thinking on your feet

This morning's meeting had the theme of "Thinking on Your Feet" which
was most appropriate considering we had a Table Topics contest. The
Table Topics master was Katrina and she challenged us with some
sporting themed questions including suggestions for cheese rolling
competitions and how to promote Australia as the best destination for
World Cup soccer.

Stephanie won the Yak Yak award with her tale of how to carry your
wife in a wife throwing competition in Denmark (or something
similar?).
